CHRISTOPHER L. WILLIAMS is an artist and professor of art / design residing in Savannah, GA. He received his BA in Studio Art from Cortland College in Cortland, NY and his MFA in painting from Mount Royal Graduate Program at The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.  He has taught for the past ten years at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and currently serves as chair of fine arts. Before moving to Savannah, he resided in Baltimore, MD, with adjunct appointments at The Corcoran College of Art + Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, and American University in Washington, DC. He has exhibited nationally, including exhibitions, public projects and installations.  Williams’ recent artwork involves a text-based earthwork project that investigates the Savannah River and southeast coast.

ARTIST STATEMENT ABOUT THE RIVER SPEAKS:

For the “Making Waves” exhibition Christopher Williams will create a large-scale earth text installation placed in the courtyard. Since the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, Williams has been creating text installations on-site in the environment. The letters are cast only in materials found on site and are allowed to degrade and disintegrate back into the environment. The text is a combination of his own thoughts and his research of the location.  For the “Making Waves” project, Williams will use materials gathered from the Savannah river to cast in the courtyard. He will construct the letters using an aggregate similar to traditional “tabby”, historically used for construction in the southeast coastal region. To gather materials, Williams uses a vessel that he constructed himself which is part functional boat and sculpture project.
